Depends on how large the pool is, and whether you mean capacity as in how much water it will hold, or how many people can use it at the same time.

If you mean capacity in gallons of water, use these formulas.

The answer would depend on average depth of the pool, and pool shape. Here are 3 equations to help you figure it out for your own pool.

For a Rectangular Pool, calculate as:

Length x Width x Average Depth x 7.5 = Total Gallons.

For Oval pool:

Length x Width x Average Depth x 5.9 = Total Gallons.

For Round pool:

Diameter x Diameter x Average Depth x 5.9 = Total Gallons.

It depends on your local regulation. This is the regulation for: METROPOLITAN NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY Maximum Bather Loading For the purposes of computing user-loading, those portions of the pool 5 feet or less in water depth shall be designated as "non-swimmer" areas. Portions of over 5 feet in water depth shall be designated as the "swimming" area. In order to compute swimmer and bather capacity, pool areas shall be determined as follows: (a) Ten square feet of pool water surface area shall be provided for each non-swimmer at time of maximum load. (b) Twenty four square feet of pool water surface area shall be provided for each swimmer at time of maximum load. (c) Three hundred square feet of pool water surface area shall be reserved around each diving board or diving platform. This area shall not be included in computing the area of the swimming section.
