Rootkits are very hard to manually remove, as they bury themselves inside of the operating system and usually have superuser (root, administrator) privileges. Rootkits use a number of techniques to hide themselves from antivirus software and the user, such as intercepting read and write requests, disabling task manager, preventing the downloading of antivirus software, etc. These devious programs usually open up a secret opening in the computer known as a "backdoor" which can then be used to download even more malware off of the Internet onto the machine.

To get rid of a rootkit, I would attempt to download antivirus software first, run a scan, and see if it finds anything. If it doesn't find anything and you are sure you are infected, I would either boot into Safe Mode and attempt to remove it manually or take the computer to a specialist.
