Any software engineer that works on improving the efficiency of anything that affects the environment is playing such a role.
For example, software in cars and planes that increases the efficiency of the engine so that less fuel is necessary to travel longer distances. Software that helps mining companies search more effectively for minerals and oil can reduce the damage done to the environment.
But as much as software might play a role in reducing global warming there will be a greater effect from renewal energy sources and battery technology. So software that helps these technologies to be more efficient or aid in their adoption would also be important.
