Many disease causing bacteria in the body require human body temperature to survive and flourish. A fever is a rise in the temperature of the body. The higher temperatures can kill the harmful bacteria resulting in the body being freed of the disease.

I can only think of two, so I hope someone comes along to improve my answer.

1. It indicates that something is wrong and will lead the person to find out what is wrong with them. This may be important for the patient's prognosis but also, if it is an infectious disease, it is important to those who the patient has been in contact with. They should watch themselves for symptoms of sickness.

2. Suppose that the cause of a fever is an infection eg 'flu. Germs and viruses like normal body temperature as they can replicate millions of times in a short period of time. The body recognises that it has been invaded by germs or a virus and it raises the temperature to kill or impede the action of the causative organism.

((I'm going to put this in brackets because although it happens, it isn't a 'proper' answer. It is that a raised temperature indicates to a doctor that the patient isn't pulling a fast one to get booked off school or work for a few days. The doctor then takes the patient seriously and does what investigations are necessary))
