Stephen Hawking was diagnosed with ALS, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, in 1963. After being diagnosed with ALS, doctors said Hawking had two years to live. Soon, Hawking turned 72 years old this past January and has been living with ALS for around 51 years.

Although Professor Hawking experienced some symptoms prior to his diagnosis, such as pain when rowing, or clumsiness and tripping observed by his family, he received his diagnosis at age 21. He has been living with the condition for over 50 years as of 2014.
