Here's my suggestion: Go outside. Go for a walk, go to a friends place. Go somewhere where the game isn't availiable for you to play it.

You could try reading a good book that you can't put down, if you're a girl i would suggest the book "Losing it". If your a guy, maybe not. Hope this helped!

I have a relative that is addicted to Video Games, as well... mostly the computer ones. What you need to do is kindly have the system taken away. Get some fresh air and things like that, it helped me out for a while (until he got the PC back).... So... I would just say, if it's computer games... find a job, buy programs and tutorials... start learning online. Buy actual books if you hate reading online too.

Hello, I am addicted to some computer games. I can't seem to get unaddicted except for one of the games. I want to delete my account on it but also want to keep it. I can stand without it for a week (no wifi at holiday place). I don't know why but I play it everyday 1 or 2 hours (not too bad right?). I DO NOT KNOW WHY I'M ADDICTED TO BE HONEST?! I KEEP PLAYING THE SAME GAME WITH SAME MAPS AND STUFF OVER AND OVER AGAIN EVEN THOUGH I MAXED OUT ALL GEAR. I badly want to be unattached to my laptop and focus on my studies because playing video games leads you nowhere, not to a university just nowhere. Please don't say: Became unaddicted that won't help. I am spending 10 minutes writing this. I have no idea why I am even addicted to it. But like I said before I don't want to delete my account. Should I maybe make a sort of timetable and only play these games in the weekends or 15 minutes at the latest? Does anyone have the same problem or thing going on? Any advice? I have some ideas. #1 I sit inside the computer room in my house with parents supervising so I can't be tempted. #2 Completely delete all my accounts and stuff on addictive games (next to impossible slightly possible). #3 Play few hours on weekends or at maximum 15 minutes games daily. #4 Abandon addictive games (next to impossible but slightly possible I'd rather delete accounts this is practically MISSION IMPOSSIBLE). Any tips or more ideas?

Compulsive gaming, or gaming addictions, are classified under the same clinical impulse control disorder as gambling. It is a medical (psychological) disorder, in other words.

When a gambler begins to get addicted to the gambling, it becomes a clinical psychological disorder. Because it is a mental addiction. The exact same thing applies to gaming.
In other words, if you have a gaming addiction, you're just like somebody with a gambling addiction.

Clinical impulse control disorders such as these are very damaging to mental, physical and social health. A gaming addiction is an irrational, abnormal and unhealthy behaviour.

You may be experiencing or will experience the following problems:

  • The addiction itself is a major problem because it is not normal behaviour for a human being.
  • Your perception of reality is likely to be severely altered.
  • You have or will have difficulties telling the difference between reality and fantasy.
  • Your body will develop bone and circulation issues due to sitting constantly, especially in the same positions. Circulation issues can cause heart attacks or blocked arteries.
  • Your lack of socialising with real human beings away from a computer screen (gaming friends do not count, they are still effectively "virtual" in a way) is negatively affected. You may develop social disorders, social anxiety and anger issues.
  • Eyesight degradation.
  • Sleep deprivation.
  • Hormonal disturbance / imbalance
  • Poor hygiene.
  • Mood swings and irritation. For example feeling more upset and angry than you should be if your gaming device is taken away.
  • Breakdown of family and relationships.
  • Financial complications.
  • Poor education, leading to poor job prospects in the future and likely homelessness.
  • And so on.

Many people with gaming addictions end up with life-changing conditions (for example, having limbs amputated due to the lack of blood circulation). Many also suffer with real-life social situations, for example finding friends or settling into a relationship, because they are not experienced in real-life social situations.

Treating your gaming problems

The main reason for gaming addiction is because people use it as a method of escaping from reality. Like alcoholics drink alcohol to escape from reality. This is likely caused by an underlying issue which needs to be resolved by a professional.

Severe cases of gaming addiction usually require professional help in the form of a psychologist or therapist.
These professionals will get you to engage in behaviour modification exercises over a period of time, which is a technique also used to treat gambling addiction and pornography addiction.

Cognitive behavioural therapy is the most popular technique used by psychologists and therapists these days to treat gaming addictions.

Another method used is called wilderness therapy. This is basically removing the addict from modern society and sending them to a camp in the wilderness, for example a forest retreat camp. There is no modern technology in these places, not even smartphones, as a method of rehabilitating the addict "cold turkey style".

You can ask your parents to help you, which I recommend. Speak to your parents, which is the hardest step, about your gaming addiction. Ask them to confiscate your gaming devices and only allow you about an hour of gaming time a day for completing chores around the house or schoolwork.

You need to seek professional help for your gaming addiction. It is not normal and it is having a massively negative impact on your life.

Games can help increase hand-eye coordination and brain development if the gaming is done moderately. But constant and compulsive gaming does the opposite. It decreases your development and leads to many other problems.

Famous gamers like iJustine and PewDiePie do not game all day and every day. They only spend about an hour or two a day gaming. The rest of the day they do normal activities, like going to the gym, getting education and going to work. If you are using people like iJustine and PewDiePie as a source of inspiration, you are misunderstanding how much time they actually spend on gaming. Which actually isn't a lot of their time.

Speak to your parents. The first step in resolving your issue is recognising that you have a problem. The hardest part is talking about it. Once you have gotten through those two barriers, your treatment and rehabilitation can begin. I recommend seeking professional help to increase your chances of resolving the compulsive and abnormal addiction.

You need to get your life back. Gaming is not life. Gaming is not a right either. Gaming is a privileged luxury. And all luxuries, whether it be gaming, gambling, drinking, smoking and so on, need to be controlled so that they do not negatively impact our health too much.

One way could be to note how much time is spent on playing games. A person could use some kind of timer to remind him or her when the assigned time to play games is up.
