That would depend on what you use it for, for a private party you could use it to locate any place in the world you wanted to visit or track, locate and recover a stolen vehicle you own. A business would use it for asset management, where they would keep track of mobile and stationary assets, track vehicle or freight locations as well as monthly reporting that helps save revenue. Whether it is the stolen vehicle, lost child or hiker or just for tracking and managing assets, GPS has been a very useful technology.

A GPS (Global Positioning System) constellation consists of about 24 satellites circling the Earth, plus a few spares to allow for breakdowns etc. Each satellite is equipped with a high precision atomic clock which emits a signal of high accuracy.

There is a similar Glonass system operated by Russia, and the European Union is commissioning another system named Galileo.

A person with an appropriate receiver, may listen out to these satellites, and provided there are at least four satellites overhead, then the position of the receiver on the Earth's surface may be calculated to a small accuracy. Depending on the receiver apparatus, resolution of a few mm may be obtained, though with hand-held apparatus, a few metres is more usual.

The signal may be degraded by the signal being close to the horizon, or by the receiver being in a canyon such as in a city or mountains. Forest cover will also degrade the accuracy.

The GPS receiver, receives time signals from satellites overhead.

The difference in time, for the signal to reach the receiver on earth, will be different from each satellite and can be measured.

The time differences are applied to a mathematical formula and give the position on earth, in three dimensions (height as well).

Additional information from the satellites will identify each one.

An almanac built into the receiver, will determine where each satellite is in the sky. (or where they should be)

This positional information is used in the calculation and the time difference signals applied to it.

The system is passive. The GPS receiver does not transmit or communicate in any way with the satellites. It listens only.

The atomic clocks onboard each satellite are monitored from earth and kept in synchronization.

What is the most common way trig is used in everyday life?

Global Positioning Systems (GPS) use trigonometry. There are a number of satellites orbiting the earth. The GPS uses the time signals sent by these satellites to establish the distance to the satellites. Trigonometry is then used to find the location of the GPS unit.
