I've seen them up to 3' and herd stories of them getting bigger. Koi, a variety of carp and closely related to goldfish, tend to grow (or not) to match the dimensions of its habitat. So carp in rice paddies can become quite large, whereas carp or koi in small tanks will remain small.

I have seen many beautiful Koi over 36" but I believe they can get considerably bigger than that. Koi were developed from the wild, common (European) carp Cyprinius carpio by the Japanese in the 1800s. These wild carp can get to over 5 foot long and weigh over 80lbs.

Up to 36 inches(3ft) make sure that if you have more than one to have a nice big pond for it, like the ones you get at Walmart. 50-100 gallons are perfect.

It all depends if they have enough food intake and water quality matters a lot. Have plenty of space and it will take about 3-5 years to grow into full size depends on breed of koi
