A microchip is an electronic device built as a single unit from many miniature components mainly transistors.Microchips are made by building up electronic circuits in a tiny wafer or pure silicon in a complicated layer-by-layer process.

This is complicated, but I will give it a try, and let others improve upon my answer. A mircochip is a electronic circuit which is made up of basic compnents(transistors, diodes, resistors, capacitors etc) digital subsystems(adders, multipliers, memories etc)and analog subsystems (amplifiers, phase-lock loops etc) interconnected to process or change the properties of electronic signals. So, the first step is to design the electronic circuit. The second step is to break down the subsystems so that the entire circuit is expressed in terms of the basic components. The third step is to implements the basic components by layers of semi-conducting materials and by metal layers. The design is expressed in a series of masks which together define the geometries of the layers. This completes the design process. The design can then be fabricated by selective doping, etching etc using the masks.

The first micro chip was made of a transistor and other components on a slice of germanium. This was created by Jack Kilby at Texas Insturments in 1958.
