Both No Gumption and Barrio Boy are similar as they are accounts of each authorâ??s childhood. Both authors grew up to become successful writers. The author of No Gumption became a success, mostly after his mother's prodding to become something more than a lazy boy who enjoyed reading Dick Tracy comics. The author of Barrio Boy, however, had no choice but to learn to survive in the barrios he lived in, both in Mexico and later in Sacramento, California.
