I just had a tonsillectomy, I would suggest applesauce and tons of water for the first couple of days. Juices, such as grape and apple, can help as well. Around day 3 or 4 you can try having some ice cream. Ice cream helps to reduce pain in the throat, you should still be drinking tons of water however. One last thing that might help, along with keeping up on your pain medication, is putting an ice pack on the outside of your neck. This really helped me because the coolness helps to dull the pain, like it would if it were a sore foot.

Gatoraid is always great, and I ate tons of chopped up eggs. (Don't over due it though or you will throw it up and be disgusted by them for a while).

I just had my tonsils out and am going on to day 4 post surgery. I want to say that first ice cream is really difficult for most patients because it causes post nasal drip and in my case it made it harder to swallow and breathe over all. However if you can put up with it and it feels ok afterwards do it. Some other choices include Scrambled eggs (cut really small and cooked really dry) Mashed potatoes (really really wet, but for me it's still hard to eat) Pudding I've lived off of those three foods for 4 days and are still the only thing I can eat. Just be careful scratchy and sticky foods will be harder to eat and cause you to bleed. Don't be stupid and send yourself back to hospital because of what you tried to eat. Last thing is stay away from citrus because it stings really bad!

The blender is your best friend. When I got mine out I blended normal foods. I blended my pasta. The is a but off but it tastes the same. Really the tonsil thing should not put you back too much its normal foods after like 4 days. I guess if you are opposed to blending just anything you can eat nonfat yogurt or low sodium soup. Baby food is really not that tasty but you can give it a try. Smoothies are great but stay away from citrus. Banannas are a nice thing to blend with a bit of the nonfat yogurt.

Eat lots of ice cream; it numbs your throat and soothes it with the coldness.

Will you have have to have surgery if you have tonsillitis?

Tonsillitis is an inflammation and infection of the tonsils. The tonsils become inflamed and swollen. They can begin to affect swallowing if they become very swollen. Plus, children often experience pain. However, Tonsillitis does NOT automatically mean surgery. It depends. Surgery is usually done if antibiotics don't help, if the child gets repeated Tonsillitis, or the tonsils remain chronically swollen. The surgery is fairly quick with very few complications.

How about tonsils? I've always heard that swallowing can be painful for a few days after the surgery and that ice cream goes down easy. Perhaps the coolness of the ice cream is soothing.
