Has anyone had to replace the entire steering column because the ignition lock cylinder is to jammed?

I drove to my local Home Depot pulled my key out and was unable to put the key back in I played with it for a few hours I sprayed WD40 into the key lock cylinder and used a paper clip in and out and finally the key went in and I had the lock replace shortly after that.
