Some supposed disadvantages (none of which have been proven) include that the food is harmful to the environment and/or humans. Overall though, no major health hazards have come to light since GM food was introduced.
One of the main disadvantages of GM food is the effect on our body can sometimes be harmful. The same hormones or chemicals used to grow the food can pass into our systems and effect our body. When you see GM chickens, they are often young, but hormones help them grow faster. If this hormone was passed to us by the chicken, young children's growth could eventually be sped up. That's the disadvantage. Hope that helps.....
1.Harm to other organisms

2.Gm food may cause health problems

3.Possible damages to the environment

4.GM food may gain undesirable properties

Two potential problems with GMO foods are unintentional negative effects on the environment, such as overuse of herbicides, and potential negative health effects on humans and animals, such as harmful effects caused by Bt varieties on the digestive tract or use of higher levels of herbicides causing human health problems, and beneficial insects being killed by Bt varieties.

There may be no danger with genetically modified foods, but many people are concerned that the effects of eating GMO foods is not known. While many studies show GMO food is safe, others point to anecdotal evidence suggesting that they may cause health issues.

There are a number of problems with GMO food. A lot of the problems relate to health. Let's suppose you produce a seed that produces chemicals that can kill insects and neighboring weeds. Then it is very possible that many will be allergic to this, even if they could previously eat the food that was modified. In that case, it might even contribute to cancer. Even if a plant is merely resistant to certain pesticides and didn't make their own pesticides, you could still be allergic to the gene that makes the plant immune to the chemicals. Plus, not only is the GMO part a problem, the way the GMO plants are handled can be a problem. If a plant is resistant to herbicides and pesticides, then it may regularly be sprayed with those chemicals. So even if the plants themselves are safe, it doesn't mean that the way they were cultivated won't sicken you.

Plus GMO foods cause legal and political problems. Since there is so much work and development involved, much like computer software or medications, such foods are often patented. Patent rights is a good concept, since if I spend billions of dollars to develop a better product, then I should have the right to prevent copying and counterfeiting of my product, at least for a considerable term like 7-14 years and be allowed to recoup my investment. However, that is where it becomes a problem.

For instance, if Farmer A buys licensed GMO seed each year from a huge food and farming conglomerate, and Farmer B is a traditional farmer who saves back his seed from the previous year, the pollen from the GMO seeds can blow onto Farmer B's crops. Then let's suppose Farmer B is unaware of this, and he saves seeds that contain at least half the genome of the seeds of Farmer A's field. Then the next year, Farmer B's crops grow to express the patented genes that he didn't purchase nor even want. If that continues another year, then Farmer B may have crops that produce the original seeds that Farmer A purchased. And the giant conglomerates know that this happens and might even establish farms for this purpose -- to contaminate the seeds of traditional farmers to be able to extort them into purchasing annual licences to plan their seeds and not save seed from previous years. Or, if that fails, they will take the traditional farmer to court for using "pirated seed" and sue them out of business in court. And the courts to this point have always sided with the huge seed and food conglomerates.

There are indications that herbicide resistant varieties result in weeds becoming more resistant to the herbicide than they would without the use of herbicide resistant varieties, and that the insecticide produced by GMO Bt varieties may harm non-targeted insects and may result in increased resistance in varieties they do target. Whether this is in part caused by poor farming practices when using GMO varieties is not known. It has also been shown that glyphosate, which is used for Round-up Ready crops harms the soil. It is also not known if the horizontal "breeding" results in unintentional horizontal transfer of the gene to other plants or animals.
