The first place to go is to the child.

Ask him or her what colours they like. You would be surprised how sophisticated a twelve year old's decoration sense is.

Admittedly you may get a request for a back or purple of lime green room, but these are all things you can work with. A client's daughter wanted a dark purple bedroom, her mother wasn't all that enthusiastic, but by painting the walls a lighter shade of the purple and using drapes and linens in the young lady's choice of royal purple, we found an excellent compromise that everyone was happy with. The overall look is still very nice and all her friends love that she got to make the colour choice.

I was called in a few years later to update the room once the young woman was in high-school and she still loved the purple, we just went to a silvery grey for the walls and carpet to give the purple a bit more polish. This time she wanted her chair reupholstered in purple... It is still one of my favourite projects.
