It is for an informed public. Otherwise you end up with leadership that try to get away with pushing bad agendas that the public does not want.

A country with a biased or captive media could try to push agendas like taking over an industry that the public doesn't want the Government to take over and then ration that industry. They tend to become more tyrannical.
