At the beginning of the independent US, the Articles of Confederation was our Constitution (document stating the basic national laws) giving most of the power to the state government. A few years later, 55 men (including Ben Franklin and George Washington) were called to revise the Articles of Confederation. When they started the meeting, they decided that they needed a stronger national government therefore deleting the articles of confederation and starting the US Constitution. The Fedralists were the people who were for the new Constitution but the anti-fedralsists were against the new constitution. Most of the anti-fedralsists were in the state government and that is why they were against it; they would lose power.

Someone can probably provide more info later, but in a nutshell:

During the Revolutionary War time period (not during the war itself), while the Founding Fathers were still getting the government running, there were the Federalists and the Anti-Federalists. Federalists liked having a strong central government--the kind with the president and congress and the supreme court. Anti-Federalists, however, wanted strong state governments--they wanted more laws to be made by state governors and state senators.

Federalists included Alexander Hamilton, who was the first Secretary of the Treasury and is on the $10 bill, and George Washington, first President of the United States.

Anti-Federalists were people like Thomas Jefferson, writer of the Declaration of Independence and third president of the United States, and Samuel Adams, the guy who led the Boston Tea Party (which was when some colonists went onto a British ship and dumped all the tea into the ocean, in protest for the high tax on tea that the British made).

I'm just spitballing here but didn't the Federalists write letters to the newspaper under fake names so that they could get their opinion through but not be able to get in troube for it. And i know there were more people on the Federalists side.
