Matter contracts as it cools taking up less space.

All matter is made up of atoms, either in small discrete groups, or in larger combinations.

As long as the background temperature is above Absolute Zero (-273O Celsius), all atoms move randomly. It is the kinetic energy (moving) of these atoms that dictates what volume they collectively occupy. We loosely measure the average kinetic as temperature, because being so small, we cannot directly measure the kinetic energy of one atom.

If the atoms or molecules are connected strongly between each other, they occupy less space than those with very weak connections. This allows us to describe matter as solids, liquids, gases or plasma.

In chemistry there are always exceptions, and water is a classic. It contracts until it reaches 4OC, and then it expands below that. At 0OC, ice has expanded enough to actually float in water.
