Tennesee if that's what you mean....has no control over the Federal process (hey..it is a state..a fiarly wimpy one at that - it is always trumped by federal regs)...and the federal process allows, and in fact for many legal reasons requires, that the option to file as joint or singular is entirely at your discretion.

When do you need to file income tax returns?

Federal income tax returns need to be filed by April 15. Most state tax returns also need to be filed by April 15 with a few exceptions. If you have not yet filed your tax return for 2008 or an earlier years, just do it now even though it's late. If any penalty applies, it will only get worse the longer you wait.

Is the surviving spouse responsible for deceased spouse's federal income tax?

I take it that the two of you filed separate returns and kept your funds separate. You are probably not responsible for your deceased spouse's federal income tax. However, your deceased spouse's estate is responsible for his or her federal income tax. That is if there is enough money in the estate to pay the taxes. Otherwise, you may need a good tax lawyer.

What if you havnt filed taxes in 8 years?

This depends on whether or not you had income during this time that would require that you file the returns. I recommend that you contact a good tax preparer in order for them to complete the returns for you and get them filed. Every year I have a few clients in the same situation and it is fixable. If you do not file your returns the IRS will complete them for you in the worst possible manner. The will be filed as single with no dependents and taxes, penalties, and interest will build up on the amounts due. You need to address this situation immediately.
