No, the proton and neutron don't have the same mass. A neutron is about 1.00138 times as heavy as a proton. The neutron is just a bit bigger, as you can see, and when a free neutron decays, it releases a proton and an electron. Protons and neutrons do have very nearly the same mass, with the neutron ever so slightly greater. The mass of the proton is about 1.672622 x 10-27 kg, while the mass of the neutron is about 1.672927 x 10-27 kg.

This difference in mass (an energy differential of about 1.293332 MeV/c2) is part of why it is easier for a neutron to change into a proton during beta- decay, than it is for a proton to change into a neutron during beta+ decay.
