Suboxone is a Semi-synthetic chemical called Buprenorphine. Buprenorphine is most commonly used as a maintenance drug for opiate dependent persons.

It is a medication derived from a synthetic poppy material Thebaine.

Buprenorphine is available as a sublingual (under the tongue) film

&SL tablet in 2mg & 8mg doses with .5mg and 2mg naloxone (an opiate antagonist) added to deter IV injection by opiate dependent users through precipitating opiate withdrawal or 'dope sickness'.

A partial mu-agonist (which means the drug only partially occupies the Mu-opiate receptors) will not be nearly as an effective painkiller as a full Mu-agonist such as Hydromorphone and Oxymorphone (very powerful Morphine derivatives for severe or terminal pain, as well as some of the most potent human metabolites of hydrocodone and oxycodone which contribute to an extent the analgesia, euphoria, miosis, and physical dependency of them.)

However, while not a typically dispensed pain alleviation prescription, When not being used to treat opiate dependency patients it is prescribed in immensely smaller doses than those for dependents in a transdermal patch called BuTrans.

Yes, but only modestly. Its primary function is to alleviate withdrawal symptoms, when detoxifying from other opiates - especially heroin, morphine compounds, oxycodone (Oxycontin and others) and hydrocodone (Vicodin, Lortab and others).

Yes it does work for most pain. But it does not work for all types of pain and does not work as well as pure opiates do.

What can you take for chronic back pain while on suboxone?

Try tylenol or something. Suboxone is an opioid. Suboxone blocks the effect of other opiates. Lower doses of this drug are administered for pain relief (suboxone should be helping your back pain), higher doses are prescribed for maintenance of opiate addictions.

Would suboxone be the best medication to take for intense pain?

This would be something you would have to discuss with your doctor because what may work for some may not work for you. Buprenorphine which is the active chemical in suboxone has been shown to be an effective pain killer but I believe in the U.S it is almost exclusively prescribed to addicts to kick the dope. No one here could give you a correct answer to this question because sure it may be an effective pain killer for me, but it may not relieve your pain. Good Luck!! {Edit} First off, if you are not on painkillers you should definitely not take Suboxone. It may be low milligrams but it is a very potent drug. 2mg and a valium or a beer have killed first time users. What the above poster stated is true, but morphine is the gold standard of pain medication, comparative to the more prescribed Oxycodone. Hydrocodone is the most commonly prescribed medication for chronic pain. Your doctor could not give you suboxone anyway, that is specifically for opiate dependence and must be licensed to prescribe. Butrans is a buprenorphine transdermal patch for pain.

Surgery but I'm taking suboxone what can i do?

Let your doctor know that you are on Suboxone, and what your dosage level is. Then, your doctor (including the ones in the hospital, postoperatively) can give you the appropriate dose of opioid equivalent medication for pain relief. Definitely talk to your doctor about this.

Why is Percocet 30 mg prescribed?

For the relief of SEVERE pain.

Pain Relief?

Pain-relief medicines are used as part of a strategy to manage short (acute) or long-term (chronic) pain. They work by targeting the cause of the pain or by reducing the feeling of pain. Some pain relief can be purchased 'over-the-counter' (OTC), meaning you don't need a prescription from your doctor to access them.
