I have stopped drinking alcohol for over 20 months (wasn't a regular drinker previously) but I have to go into pubs for meals, etc.. So for the last 20 months I drink tonic water with my pub meal. However, I find that EVERY time I drink 2 or more tonic waters I get a headache akin to a hangover (main reason I stopped alcohol) the next day. I definitely think there is a connection as it happens EVERY time and I would like an explanation.
I'm convinced it caused my major flare ups. I was drinking a lot of vodka tonics at the time I had the worst flare up of my life. By chance, I started drinking other things about the time I had all the shots that fixed my foot. I've had no issues for almost two years until I started drinking vodka tonic again. This is no scientific experiment but it's good enough for me.
I had the exact opposite reaction. I didn't want to take Alopurinal but when I read about it I noticed it was used mostly for malaria treatment, as is quinine. I started drinking a little Tonic Water (about 4oz a day), which contains a small amount of quinine. My attack started clearing up the 2nd day and continued to get better. Since you were probably getting a larger % of alcohol (a no-no for gout) in comparison to the % of quinine in the tonic water you probably got the opposite reaction.

Updated on March 5, 2010: I'd like to see an expansion of this unique question. From August, 2009 until October 2009 I had the most severe gout inflammations I had ever experienced. My gout first appeared in the winter of 2003. After switching to a vegetarian diet my gout had all but disappeared by the fall of 2004. I started to eat meat again in the fall of 2008. I did not get gout again August of 2009, as I mentioned.
I changed my diet to exclude the usual suspects, smoked meat, pickled foods, even coffee. I ate bags of cherries. None of these changes significantly affected my gout symptoms. All this time I was chronically drinking tonic water, with quinine. When I asked myself, what is the one thing I am doing consistently on a daily basis? I concluded it was drinking tonic water with quinine. I stopped drinking tonic water altogether. Coincidentally (?) my gout went away in mid October, 2009. I do not drink tonic water to this day, and my gout has not even so much as given a twinge.
Based on my own bio-assay, I would like to see more exploration of the possible link between tonic water/quinine and gout inflammation.
Yes.Tonic water contains quinine, to which some people are allergic.
quinine
quinine
The ingredient that is unique to tonic water is quinine. Although quinine has many bad effects when consumed to great excess, insomnia is not among them. In fact, somnolence -- the opposite of insomnia -- is common.
No. it makes no difference at all. however it may help in the case of cramps if it contains quinine. A quinine based product is used however in the case of a disease modifying drug that is used to treat RA.
Yeah, you can. Some people have a bad reaction to the quinine in tonic water, but this is rare and if you were one of the people who had a reaction to it, it would affect you whether coumadin was involved or not.
Yes if you hold a black light by it it will glow only real quinine does that
Quinine
Tonic water containing quinine is used in gin and tonic drinks. Originally, this was for the anti-malarial qualities of quinine. In the United States, although quinine is a prescription drug, tonic water containing quinine is readily available in most grocery stores. This is often used as a remedy for nocturnal leg cramps. Caution should be used when consuming quinine in any form, however, since quinine can have severe side effects, should not be taken by people with certain conditions, and should not be taken with certain medications.
The quinine in the tonic water makes it glow blue if you put it under a blacklight!
Quinine has been shown to cause birth defects when taken as early as the 1st trimester. It would be safe to eliminate it from your diet altogether.
The ingredient in tonic water that makes it taste like tonic water - quinine - is the cause. Because of its molecular structure, it will fluoresce blue in sunlight and positively glow under a black light.
