This type of injury is best covered under ones own medical insurance policy.

Unless the bat was a pet scheduled for coverage under your homeowners insurance policy and barring some negligence on the part of the home owner, it is doubtful the homeowner would be liable for such an injury.

It's not much different from being bitten by a snake while walking down a sidewalk, most people are generally not in a position to be legally liable for the acts of unowned wild animals.

What insurance will cover dog bites?

I am a licensed insurance agent; licensed in 45 states for 16 years. I sell animal liability insurance and have extensive insurance experience. First, a dog bite will never be covered if you buy insurance AFTER the bite has occurred. Second, you should always have a renter's insurance policy or homeowner's insurance policy, regardless of whether or not you own a dog. If your dog has no prior bite history, you will probably have coverage for a dog bite in the future. But you should always read your policy to be certain that coverage for animals or coverage for certain breeds of dog are not excluded. Third, if your dog cannot be covered by your renter's insurance or homeowner's insurance; you can always buy animal liability insurance to cover such unfortunate events.

How can you get someones auto insurance to see if they have umbrella policy to cover a dog bite?

If you have expenses due to being bitten by someone's dog, one way would be to go to your insurance company to make a claim. They will go after the people for you and find out if they have umbrella insurance.

What should a homeowner do if their homeowners insurance was cancelled because of a dog-bite claim for 25k?

Shop for a new insurance carrier. If still no luck, then it becomes what is referred to as "Assigned Risk". Generally, it takes 3 or more refusals to issue before that is considered. Assigned risk means that the state in which the property is located, assigned your policy to a insurance carrier. Very expensive, as you can imagine.

Can insurance company cancel homeowners because of types of dogs you own?

Absolutely. Every homeowners insurance company I know of asks if you have pets and if so what breed. Most specifically ask about Pit Bulls, Rotweillers, Doberman Pinchers, German Shepherds, any dog partly made up of these breeds, or any animal with a bite history. If you look at the statistics you will see that Pit Bulls make up less that 2% of the dogs in the U.S. but result in over 60% of the deaths with over half being children under 12. These types of dogs result is millions of dollars each year in losses from lawsuits over a biting. Of course these are not the only dogs that bite but these are most of them. Homeowners insurance covers suits and legal fees for this and many other items. The applications also ask if you own a trampoline or an unfenced pool. If you have one of these dogs some companies will write the insurance if you sign an animal bite exclusion which excludes coverage for suits of this type.

Will an Akita raise your homeowner insurance?

Rates are not generally raised for having large or viscious dogs but often times insurance companies will not insure you if you have a large viscious dog or one with bite history. Occassionally some companies will allow you to sign an exclusion for animal liability. If you have a Pit Bull, Rottwiller, Doberman, German Sheppard, or others or any dog that has bitten anyone you will have trouble getting homeowners insurance.

How much does homeowners insurance go up if you have a pitbull?

If you have a pitbull, rottweiler, doberman pinscher, or any animal with a bite history as well as an unfenced swimming pool, or trampoline then most insurance companies will not write you homeowners insurance at any price. The very few that will offer you coverage only will do so if you sign an exclusion of liability form for whatever the risk is for. For instance, if you have a viscous dog then you will sign a form that excludes coverage for any liability caused by an animal bite. Pitbulls have been responsible for about 50 percent of all liability payments for animal bites and they are responsible for about 75 percent of all fatalities involving animals. People should not own pitbulls or dogs made of pitbull mixed dogs. The risk is not work it. Get a poodle.

Will any insurance company provide you with coverage if you own a pitbull?

Most insurance companies will not cover you if you own a pitbull. State Farm will cover you if you own a pitbull. I own a pitbull and they were the only company that I could find that didn't care.

Does American Family Insurance Dog Breed Discriminate for Homeowners Insurance?

What do you mean by this question? If you are asking if they will not cover certain breed the answer is yes. Every insurance company I am aware of asks on their application if you own certain breeds or any dog who has bitten anyone. The top of the list always included Pit Bulls, Rottweilers, German Shepherds, Doberman Pinchers, etc. If you want to argue Pitt Bulls forget it. Over half of the bites last year were from Pit Bulls and almost every bite involving death was from a Pit Bull. No one should own a Pit Bull. They are far too aggressive and deadly.
