The Antiguan Carnival is a celebration of music and dance held annually from the end of July to the first Tuesday in August. The most important day, is that of J'ouvert morning, in which brass and steel bands perform for much of the islands population.

The origins of street paries associated with J'ouvert coincide with the emancipation from slavery in 1838. Emancipation provided Africans with the opportunity to not only participate in carnival but to embrace it as a expression of their new found freedom.

This celebration is part of Antiguas tradition.
