However, if there are other causes behind his not working, like preoccupation with something else (an addiction or obsessive compulsion), or if he suffers from severe anxiety or depression, etc, this can contribute and be considered possibly an illness or a disorder.
If he falls into the first category there isn't much you can do unless you're the one enabling him. If so, then you can stop.
