If you want to start a book that isn't divided into chapters, it really is your book. You can design your book however you want.
Note that you may get some pushback from editors: Terry Prachett used to write his Discworld novels in chapterless form, and despite the fact that by the 15th one or so it was pretty well proven that they did in fact sell quite well in that form, he still got pressure from his editors to include them (some of his latest novels do have chapters).

Novels don't have to have chapters but it's a good idea. Books are usually divided into chapters or parts (Part 1, Part 2 etc) so as to break the work up.

A long novel without any divisions is often just too long for a reader.

The main benefit of using chapters is to pace your novel. Would you rather read page after page with no breaks or have nice, well-paced sections that allow you to stop at intervals?

Another advantage is that you can end chapters on cliffhangers which will urge your reader to continue reading.

There are successful books without any chapters though such as the Discworld series by Terry Pratchett.

The number of chapters in a book can vary widely depending on the author's style and the content of the book. However, a typical book may have anywhere from 10 to 30 chapters.

No. But it makes it easier to organize and read. It breaks sections up like a new paragraph does.

That is why it is called a chapter book. The chapters help separate the events that happen in the story.
