1997 Cadillac SLS - only 44k miles and it uses oil has anyone else had this problem and found a solution?

I have a 97 SLS with 54K miles and have the same result as you. The early designs of the Northstar engine burns oil due to carbon buildup on the oil control rings. Not much you can do, other than to enjoy the wonderful engine and keep an eye on the oil level. Between changes at 3000 mile intervals, I normally add about 1-2 quarts. I have read articles that some Cadillac Northstar owners have had good experience in freeing the oil control rings by periodic wide-open throttle runs, but cannot confirm that this will work. Might be expensive or dangerous as well. Anyway, I keep a couple of quarts of oil in the trunk. Since the engine holds 7 quarts of oil, by the time your oil light comes on, you still have more than enough oil to lubricate your engine. Personally, I check my oil level frequently and top it off prior to it reaching a level to activate the low oil light. if these engines are babied they will consume more oil. The more often you use and "abuse" the northstar engine the less oil it will burn. It is designed as a hi-po engine and likes to be used as such. On a technical note the honing "finish" in the cylinder is designed to keep more oil on the walls for beter lubrication at the top of the cylinder and valve stems which produces a longer life................if only the rest of the car would hold up as well. there is a decarbon process that has shown good results available at the dealer
