If you are a US resident and citizen, you will need a passport to fly to Canada. You will not need one if you are planning to drive from the US to the port in Canada. Until later in fall 2008, you also do not need a passport to travel by ship to Canada -- but you will need a certified copy of your birth certificate and a government-issued photo ID.

Implementation of the regulations requiring passports for travel by land and ship to all countries, including Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean, were postponed and a new date has not been established. It is expected the new implementation date will be in the fall, 2008.
