I assume that your question is geared toward tracking your opponents movement. The intent of practicing good footwork is to move you in and out of position, however, a good fake can move your opponent out of their position and will give you an advantage over them in time and space. A good opponent will challenge you with fakes or feigned moves.
It is easy to fake a direction with your feet, or your head, shoulders, arms and a good hip fake can trow off an opponent. This is true in fighting or in other sports like soccer or Basketball. The defense to the fake is to not be drawn in by uncommited motion.
To track your opponents movement, track their body core, while it is possible to fake left or fake right with the feet or the hips, you can not make an uncommitted move from the belly button. By watching your opponents body core, you can still keep your line of sight up.
