Do you need a HDMI cable to play bluray on ps3?

You certainly Can. The only downfall about not playing your PS3 on an HD television is that obviously the quality of the graphics will be a lot lower. In the PS3 box you are supplied with an AV Cable that consists of three coloured prongs: White, Yellow and Red which all correspond to a coloured socket on the side of your television. Alternatively you can buy an adapter to convert these three jacks into a scart head which then simply plugs into the back of your tv.

From personal experience I would suggest buying an HD television to get the most out of your PS3. If you are unable to use the AV cable as it comes and then the scart adapter as a last resort.

You can connect the PS3 to any kind of television that has A/V inputs. In some cases it may require purchase of optional connection cables but those are mainly to allow connection to the different HD television inputs like HDMI, component, and S-Video. The kind of TV you connect to only matters because the PS3 picture can not be in HD on a regular TV. It also cannot be in HD without a HD connection even if the TV is HD

But it looks awful. Probably worse than it would on a traditional CRT tube television. Not true this is about the brand and quality of the HDTV and not the PS3 although it is true HDMI cables make a world of difference.

You need a 1080P HDTV and the cable to Play blue-ray in 1080P with your PS3. The cable that comes with the PS3 is only a 480I Audio Video cable and need a cable that will allow 1080P if you have that kind of HDTV. Other cables were not included with your PS3 because they could not know what TV the PS3 would be connected to and they provided one that would allow the PS3 to function until you purchased the correct cable for 720P and 1080P HDTVs
