If you buy a gun at a gun shop or from any other licenced dealer, yes, you are required to pass a background check unless you are also a licensed dealer. This holds true in every state. However, in TN, a background check is not required on a person to person non-dealer sale, but you must have reasonble belief that the buyer can legally own the gun.

How do you buy a handgun in tn do i have to go the cop shop first?

I'm not sure what you mean exactly by cop shop, but in TN, anyone 21 or older who is not a prohibited person can purchase a handgun. There are a couple of ways to do it. 1. Go into any gun shop or pawn shop and purchase whichever gun you want. You will have to fill out a form and pay sales tax and a $10 background check fee (which goes to the TBI). The advantage with that is you know the gun isn't stolen. 2. Purchase a gun from an individual. There is no requirement in TN law for any paperwork to be processed when selling a gun between two individuals, however, some people will want you to sign a bill of sale. It's also a good idea (most people would say) to buy a gun only from an individual you know to be trustworthy.
