Some people say they are vegetarian, others say they are bottom feeders. I say both. Tilapia can act more like bottom feeders if they live in certain conditions. Some fish farms use them to "clean" the water of other fish and then sell both to market. And other fish farms just overcrowd their ponds. Tilapia are a very hearty fish and will eat just about anything, so this tendency is what makes them occasional bottom feeders. Even in the wild, if conditions are right, they may act more like bottom feeders for survival. Do some research on where your fish is coming from and you can narrow down the chances of getting fish that have been raised in unclean conditions. But remember, there are MANY animals that we regularly consume without hesitation that occasionally eat nasty things.

When it comes to fish eating fish it is always a matter of size difference and species difference. Any small fish can be devoured by a fish that is large enough and it doesn't matter where they feed . Top feeders, bottom feeders they are all the same to a predator species.
