Do you have a guardian angel?

Yes, every single person who was ever conceived has a Guardian Angel. As the Catechism of the Catholic Church states in paragraph 336:

336 From its beginning until death, human life is surrounded by their [the Angels] watchful care and intercession (Cf. Matthew 18:10; Luke 16:22; Psalm 34:7; 91:10-13; Job 33:23-24: Zechariah 1:12; Tobit12:12) "Beside each believer stands an angel as protector and shepherd leading him to life." (St. Basil, Adv. EunomiumIII; PG 29, 656B.) Already here on earth the Christian life shares by faith in the blessed company of angels and men united in God.

No. Nowhere in The Bible does it specifically state that every person has a guardian angel. But that doesn't mean that people haven't been protected/guarded by angels in the Bible and even today. The Bible explains in Hebrews 1:14New International Version (NIV):


14 Are not all angels ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation?

For the 'elect' or 'little flock' that will repent, be baptized and follow (disciple means to imitate) Christ, these are surely protected as it is God's will. But remember God tests each and everyone of us (1 Thessalonians 2:4). So it all boils down to God as the main source of protection, period.

A recent 2008 USA poll found over 50% of Americans believe in a guardian angel who watches over them and protects them when needed. Unfortunately, this is a teaching of men and not the Scripture. Another poll conducted by the Pew Forum on the 'U.S. Religious Knowledge Survey' found that atheists and agnostics know more about religion than religious people. So you can see that Americans are not well informed on practices and tenets, history and leading figures of major faith traditions - which includes their own. They simple accept what others before them accepted or are told/taught in their churches/schools.

In the Greek and the Hebrew (mal'ak), an angel simply means a messenger. They are spiritually created beings (Colossians 1:16, Nehemiah 9:6 and Job 38:4-7). They do not have gender or marry (Mark 12:25). They do not lie (Luke 20:36). They have more wisdom than humans (Matthew 24:36). And presently, they are more powerful than we humans (Matthew 28:2, Acts 5:19 and 2 Peter 2:11). They are God's messengers (Luke 1:11, Matthew 1:20, and Revelation 14:6). They also protect God's chosen (Psalm 35:1; 91:11, Daniel 6:22) to mention a few.

But it is God who is above all and controls all - including protection/guardianship - no one else (Exodus 20:3, Colossians 2:18 and Revelation 19:10). Prayer is our human way of speaking to God and asking Him for all our needs. He answers all who serve Him as is His will for our best well being - maybe not in this physical life but surely for our eternal salvation.
