That depends on where you live and the conditions you are growing them in. In rich, well watered soil, they do not require any real care. In drier soil, they may need watered occasionally to grow to their full potential.

sun, water, compost.

Sounds simple enough, but that really is it. Sunflowers love rich soil that drains well. They are FEEDERS so if you can not use rich soil, you will need to fertilize.

They also love to drink, I wait till i see wilting before watering. I water deep using drip irrigation in the early AM.

Full sun is best for most areas & seasons.

I live in zone 9, in the winter time 8 hours of sun gives me fantastic huge flowers but in the summer (same spot) I get smaller stunted plants (I just cant seem to water enough). I the summer time I do much better in part shade (4-6 hours of sun).

The sunflower plant responds to sunlight so that the flower heads always faces the sun.

When the sun shines on the plant, the side of the stem in the shadow, receiving less light), is stimulated to grow faster than the well lit side. The uneven growth tilts the flower head in the direction of the sun giving the appearance of the flower moving to point towards the sun.

Sunflowers prefer full sunlight, and appropriate water. They do not need excessive water. They will still grow if they are in part-shade.
