It's a scam. Tithing was an Old Testament requirement only for certain israelites in certain circumstances. It no longer applies to Jews today and it was never meant for christians at all. Those preachers are abusing an obsolete law for their own financial gain. If any preacher says you must tithe or else you won't achieve salvation, run far, far away.
