The predators that ostriches have usually go after the eggs for food. These would include vultures, mongoose and jackals. As the ostriches grows, they gain other predators such as hyenas, cheetahs, lions, African wild dogs and leopards.
The Ostrich is normally found in open flat land around the equater in North Africa. However, it has historically been native to Southern Africa, the Middle East, and even Europe. As such predators of this animal are restricted to those in its natural habitat and due to its speed this precludes most carnivores. It is aided by its wings, when at full speed these help maintain its speed and balance. It also has a very powerful kick with its legs and its claws can be dangerous to any potential threat. It is possible that a well directed kick could kill most other animals in its size range. As a result the usually cautious cheetah rarely attack these most largest of birds. However, when they do attack, in packs, they are seen to chase the ostrich and jump on top of them and attack the neck from behind, thereby reducing the defensive capabilities of the Osterich. Other larger cats are also known to attack and kill the ostrich in this way including the tiger, although, they don't normally coexist in the same environments in the modern day, and occasionally lion prides although due to their pace the ostrich can often escape from the latter predators. Yes, the ostrich digs a hole and sticks it's head into the ground to hide from predators, it leaves the ostrich looking a bit like a tree or a bush to make it harder for predators to recognise them.
So it can escape from predators!
Since they do not fly, it helps them avoid predators.
It is the preferred method of defense when it cannot flee: the ostrich uses its strong legs and heavy claws to strike at other birds, or predators.
