Many groups live bin the Australian outback. There are still groups of Aborigines, although very few of them live even a semi-traditional lifestyle, with many of them adopting European ways.

Cattle station owners, their families and workers such as stockmen live in the outback. Children on here remote stations attain their schooling by "School of the Air", whereby they correspond with their teachers via radio and the internet. Similarly, huge sheep stations take up vast tracts of outback land, and these sheep stations require shearers and stockmen. Small towns service the needs of these people, so these towns require people to run the businesses, trade centres and work in the administrative centres.

Many mining settlements are dotted throughout the outback. These mining towns cater for quite large populations, and while some residents are permanent, a large number are transient workers, commonly called FIFOs (Fly in, fly out). Again, businesses, tradespeople, teachers, medical personnel, etc, are required to provide services for these populations.

It is difficult to determine an actual figure for the population of the Australian outback, as there is no clear-cut definition of where the outback begins.

However, according to a study on the economic demography of outback Australia conducted by the Charles Darwin University in the Northern Territory, the population had declined to around 690,000 by 2006. This was down from 700,000 in 1996, in a decline of 3.7%. This was despite Australia's population increasing by around 12% in the same time period.

Is the outback habitable?

Most of what Australians call the "outback" is indeed habitable, but it is sparsely populated. There are vast sheep and cattle properties in the outback. The outback does not actually refer to the desert areas of Australia. It is a vague term for Australia's remote areas which are hundreds or thousands of kilometres from the larger settlements.

Melbourne or Sydney.

Why do lots of people live on the coast of Australia and not the middle?

This pattern is 'generally' true of most countries. Traditionally settlers settled where there were transportation routes, and this usually meant where there were rivers and coasts. Alot of the worlds largest cities are on rivers or coasts for this reason and the fact that people need water to live. This is exagerated by the size of Australia, as in it becomes more obvious the difference in density in inland 'outback' areas and coastal regions. Australia's 'outback' is mostly an inhospitable desert, with few water resources so no long term prospects for large populations to survive in such arid regions.

Are there bees in the Australian Outback?

Why is the western region of Australia called the outback?

The term "outback" refers to the minimally occupied regions beyond the main settlements. It comes from the fact that it is "out the back of beyond". It is, quite simply, a long way from civilisation. There seem to be no restrictions to the continuous wide, open spaces, and when you are in the outback there's a good chance that, unless you're on the major highways, you can travel for hours without meeting another car. Australia is a vast country, with huge tracts of unoccupied, dry land, which is the outback. It is its geography which makes it "the outback".

Is Australia a developed country?

Australia is a single country. It is a modern developed country. It is a Federation of States which up to 1901 were colonies of Great Britain. Its has a population of approx. 21million people most of whom live in large cities on the Eastern Coast. Australia is and island continent. It has no borders with any other country. It has an indigenous population of aboriginal people who were badly treated when Britain settled Australia in the eighteenth century. These people are treated as Australian citizens but many still live in isolated communities in the outback desert regions or in the tropical North.
