It works on two levels. The first being it masks the carbon dioxide that is emitted from your skin that the mosquitos are attracted to in the first place. The second, is that there is a chemical called deet in most repellants that is an irritant when the mosquito lands on your skin for a taste.

Its a combination of camoflaging the smell of your sweat, which they are attracted to, and giving of a different odor they are not attracted to and rather dislike

not really, mosquito repellent is made with deet, which just iritates them, its like if I covered you in something spicy or slightly acidic
