It is a scientific myth that a duck's quack does not echo. Research has shown that a duck's quack does echo, but it is hard to hear because it is difficult to distinguish the quack from the echo.

There are several reasons why it is difficult to hear the echo:

  • Echoes are produced after loud noises. Ducks quack very softly, so the reflected sound is difficult to hear.
  • A reflecting surface is needed to hear an echo. Ducks tend not to live near reflecting surfaces such as cliff faces or buildings. An echo could be heard more readily if the duck quacked whilst flying past such as surface.

To see details of the scientific research, see the related link.
A duck's quack does in fact echo. If you search this in on Google, almost every site will say the same thing. The reason they say it doesn't echo is because the length of the quack covers up the echo. There have been many different studies and experiments done on this subject, and, with the right equipment and procedure, all come up with the same conclusion that a duck's quack does echo; It's proven.

In all Mallard-derived ducks, the female makes a loud quack, while the male's "quack" is very soft, whispery, and raspy.

The "QUACK!" sound that most people associate with ducks is made by the female. Muscovy ducks are more quiet than Mallard-derived ducks, and the males hiss.

Ducks that breed in temperate and the Arctic Northern Hemisphere do; if they breed in the tropics, they tend to stay there. If it's warm, the ducks will likely not migrate.

Are there ducks that do not quack?

Duck is the common name for a large number of birds in the Anatidae family. And with over 120 different species, ducks are incredibly diverse and can be found all over the world. Of these birds we call "Ducks" some of the them have a call other than a "quack". The most common "Ducks" of North America, like those you see on a farm, as a general rule of thumb all "quack" both male and female. Their call or "quack" is different between male and female. There are some types of Anatidae that don't have a "quack" call.
