My experience with electronic pest repellents is that they do work. I have used them to keep possums and rabbits out of vegetable patches, birds and also kangaroos out of orchards.

They emit a sonic type frequency that the target animal doesn't like, it doesn't cause them any harm or to humans either.

The noise is undetectable to humans.

I can't say for sure. But there are various well-established companies vying for the top spot. Here are some that I know:

Riddex - You've seen this on TV. Mostly small repellers for office and home use. Targets lots of pests.

Pest Offense - Quite well-known. Mostly small repellers for office and home use. Targets lots of pests.

Victor - Focuses on outdoor ultrasonic repellers or repellers suitable for large areas. Specializes on mice. I prefer this repeller.

Bird-X - Outdoor ultrasonic repellers too but specializes on birds, raccoons, squirrels, etc.

Black & Decker - Mostly repellers for large rooms. Targets various pests.

While electronic pest repelling devices have shown some ability to move pests. In all of the university studies I have seen the pests get used to the sonic device and adapt over time and are no longer affected by it. My advice is don't waste your money.

Does the riddex electronic pest repeller stop working?

The Riddex pest repeller produces high-frequency sound waves that are harmless to humans and pets (except rodents), but which are heard by insects and rodents and are supposed to drive them away. This may sound good in theory, but it doesn't work in practice. At best, electronic pest repellers may work for a few hours or days, but they apparently have no long-term effect on pests. Also, many people claim that they can hear a whining and/or buzzing noise made by the repellers. After numerous complaints, the company that produces Riddex agreed with the FTC to not make certain claims as to their product's effectiveness. You can read the agreement on the FTC site: http://www.ftc.gov/opa/2003/07/global.shtm

How long are the pest repellers effective and how do you know that they are still working?

Some may work short term but how long depends on the pest. They are more effective for mammals than insects, but not for long. That is why pest companies don't use them. If they worked, they would sell them to you-trust me.
