Usually you plant them in full sun and some will tolerate part-shade. All that depends on your climate, of course. This would apply to a temperate climate. They are quite tough in regard to heat.

Mums need to be placed in full sun. If you don't have an area that gets a full 8 hours of sunlight everyday, put them in a place where the mums will get at least 5 hours.

Daylilies want full sun. Some will still bloom in part shade but they will grow very slowly.
