Chickens are scavenger's.
They typically do not eat their own eggs, but they do this when they are not getting enough food, or are not getting enough protein in their diet.
You can feed them COOKED eggs to discourage this, as well as making special laying boxes (where the eggs roll out of reach so that the hens cannot eat them).
i have 14 chickens and a couple times that happend to me and all my chickens are in one big coop so the first time that happend to me , i relized that they didnt have enough food then the other time, i relized that 3 eggs were broken and eaten from my chickens and the had food and all but they wouldent eat the food so we threw the old food out for the birds and we got them 2 different kinds of food and mixed them we got corn scrach , and layer feed.and sometimes we feed them bread so they have a different verity..and now they are living fine ....
Actually the main reason chickens eat the eggs is for the calcium in the shell. If you start giving them a calcium suppliment such as crushed oyster shell the problem will stop in a few weeks!
Possibly because there is no other food around. An egg can provide very good nutrition to the creature that eats it. Many animals eat their young. They may do so because the animal is in suffering and they feel the need to ease its pain. They may do so because of starvation. They may do so to get rid of extra competition. They may do so because the young is sick or diseased and might get the other young sick. They may also do so because they are simply crazy.
Chickens eat their eggs when they dont have enough protein in their diet. Are you feeding them a good quality feed? To help reduce this phenomenon, simply COOK their eggs and feed it back to them. This will help them to stop eating the raw eggs....
Sometimes. There are hens that break and eat their eggs, and sometimes a rooster will do so as well. A hen that has this problem sometimes has to be removed from the flock. ANY egg that is naturally broken, however, is fair-game for the chickens. The yolk and white are a rich source of protein, and the shell contains calcium. The chickens are not going to let such a rich food-source go to waste. Chickens are not over-picky in their eating habits, and do not see this as cannibalism.
It could be that your hens are not getting enough nutrition or calcium in their diet. Make sure you are feeding them a "layer" feed such as pellets, MASH, or crumble besides a scratch grain. Also, it could be that their shells are so thin that they are breaking them open when they get up to leave the nest. Try feeding them osyter shell pieces.
Yes. Eggs are very nutritious and tasty for chickens (as wrong as it seems!) This can quickly become a problem for people raising poultry, since other chickens can learn the egg-eating behavior and completely ruin egg production by feasting on their own eggs!

They are from CHICKENS OR HENS because an egg can not produce another egg. (They are hens not chickens.)
