Best Answer

The large carnation of flower bouquets (Dianthus caryophyllus) comes from a plant that grows to be about 30 inches (80cm) tall. The straight, strong stems can be 18-24 inches long. The carnation plant needs full sun (at least 6 hours per day), a soil rich in organic matter and well-drained, moist, not wet, soil.

Carnations can be reproduced in three different ways:

  1. Seeds: seeds germinate in 2-3 weeks. Seeds are important for the genetic variability and adaptability of the species, but you can never be sure of what you'll get until the flower blooms.
  2. Cuttings: method of choice for perennial carnations. Cut the terminal growth 4-6 inches in length and insert into sand. Best done in mid-to-late summer. Ready to transplant in 25-30 days.
  3. Division: dig up a clump, pull it apart and replant.
