Hi

I am Andrew Nebbett of Andrew Nebbett Antiques London

There is no legal requiremant for a shop with Antiques above the door to sell REAL antiques and there are many that abuse this across the world. In the UK we are bound by what we write on a receipt for any goods purchased and there have been many court cases where customers have been refunded their money.

In reality here is my advice: Go to a well established shop, ask lots of questions about an item....how old is it, has it been restored, etc and ask for a full receipt describing everything you have been told. The receipt must not contain the word STYLE as this when used with the pre name Georgian, Victorian etc will tell you that the item is not a genuine period one and some kind of copy.

The receipt should record date ie c1860 (circa) description and country of origin.

Finally it is beneficial to build up a relationship with a friendly dealer as they will guide you through the process....and they hope you will come back again having been happy with your purchase !

How does the authenticity of an antique affect its value?

The authenticity of an antique is the reason the item has value. Antiques have the price that they do because they are old. If an item is simply a reproduction, its value will be less than that of the real antique.

Real antique trunks are harder to find these days after a surge in interest in them in the late 1970s into the 1980s. Authentic antique trunks are found in antique shops, generally. This site offers the real thing: www.eagletrunks.com/ You can also find reproductions as well. Check out www.woodchests.com

There are many places... auctions, garage sales, retail stores etc. Or if just want to be at home relaxing and buying antiques, you can go to the online antique mall, there you can have easy access of antiques without a sweat. If you want to know the best places to buy cheaply, you're probably best to check on some kind of educational program that teaches about antiques in their entirety (like the antique home study school, Asheford Institute Of Antiques)... also taking some kind of course will help make sure you're actually buying "real" antiques, and not fakes.

How To Find The Best Antique Appraisers?

Most consumers do not know the value of the antiques in their homes. Even the most tarnished set of candlesticks may actually be Paul Revere originals. Trusting an antique to an appraiser for their valuable opinion is something thousands of people do each month. There are appraisers that are not legitimate though and may run scams. Knowing what to look for is important to be sure the full value for the antique will be received. This article will explain how to find the best appraisers. One of the most common scams that fake appraisers use involves themselves and another fake antique purchaser. The fake appraiser will name a much lower price than what is the actual value and recommend the consumer to what they call the best antique dealer, who they assure them will offer the highest price to buy the item. Most real appraisers will not try to push a consumer to an antique dealer. They may suggest several dealers if asked, but they will never suggest that. This should always be a warning sign. To find the most reliable appraisers, look for ones who have a strong background in museum science or have a long history of experience in antiques. Most appraisers who have extensive experience have studied antiques their entire life and are part of antique appraiser societies. Ask about any awards, previous education, society memberships or even proof of history. It is also a good idea to use appraisers who have a solid reputation. Watch shows such as Antique Roadshow, where sometimes the appraisers accept inquiries from viewers. If the treasure in question is worth a good amount of money, it will receive attention. Scan newspapers and local antique shops for information about traveling antique appraisers. If the name of the traveling appraisers or company is available, perform an internet search to see if they have a good reputation. One more important thing to remember is that no appraiser will ask to keep the antique. It is acceptable to allow the appraiser to take photos and give them a contact phone number, but do not leave the item in their care, especially if their history is unknown.

How to Get Antiques Appraised?

Antiques may not only look beautiful, but they can bring in a lot of money if you make the decision to sell them. Sure, there are a lot of antiques out there that are purely aesthetic and have no real value to them. However, there are also a lot of good quality ones that could be hundreds or even thousands of dollars in value if you ever decide to sell them off. The best way for you to get to know your specific antique is to have it appraised by a professional. This will help you to know a little history on the antique itself and what it is going to be worth if you choose to sell it. Not all antiques are worth something, so you should never go into an appraisal district thinking that what you have is worth thousands of dollars. Many antique collectors have been very disappointed by assuming that something is worth more than it really is. You might also want to consider doing a bit of research yourself online to figure out a little history of the piece before going to an appraisal professional. There are quite a number of antique forums that you can make use of so that you are able to talk with other people who can help you decipher between something of value and a dud. The best way to find an antique appraisal district is to simply look in your local area by asking friends or going online and searching for one. Try to avoid any appraisal studio that charges too much for their work or professionals who appraise your antiques and then buy them off of you. These types of professionals tend to appraise the antique for a lot lower than it is because they do not want to pay too much for it. It is up to you whether you want to ultimate sell your antique or hang onto it, but it is a good idea to have it appraised so that you have an idea of what it is worth and what to expect to get from it if you get a buyer.
