No, you dont need a sewing machine to sew but it is better to have one as they are faster. if your not bothered about the speed of your work than you can always hand stitch. The stitches would probably be more accurate with a sewing machine but the only main difference is the speed.

Absolutely. All sewing machines are also quilting machines. I teach quilting and have had people in my classes with machines that were 40 years old. As long as your machine is in good working order (always have it serviced by a reputable dealer at least once a year if you sew a lot) you can quilt on any sewing machine. If you want to topstitch, use a topstitch needle and the thread you want. The needle size will depend on what thread you have chosen. Always use good thread, not the stuff in the bargain bin. Once you've chosen your thread it will usually say on the spool what size needle to use. If it doesn't go to the website of the threadmaker and they will tell you. For instance, Coats & Clark don't always show the needle needed, but their website lists all the threads and all the needles. The best way to learn about thread is to go to the various websites of each of the good threadmakers----Superior Threads, Madeira, Aurafil, Sulky, or go to a dealer who sells all kinds of threads. A quilt shop in your neighborhood that has a large variety of threads will be able to help you. Take a class, get a book from the library that is new and up to date. There are so many threads and so many new techniques to learn about. Do your homework at a quilt shop. They are the experts.

If you mean at the beginning or ending of your quilting, just drop the feed dog so that the fabric does not move. I do this when I am free motion quilting, but if I am using the feed dog to pull the fabric, then I just back stitch one or two stitches to tie it off.

A serger and a sewing machine are two separate machines.

A sewing machine is used to sew fabrics together, using a a variety of stitches. It sews with one needle, with an upper thread and a bobbin thread. It sews a line of stitches that you can guide by moving the cloth around.

A serger is used to finish the edge of the fabric or the seam. It uses 1 or 2 needles, and 3 or 4 threads. It has a blade that trims the seam allowance or fabric edge as you sew. The threads create a casing on the edge of the fabric or seam allowance, preventing the fabric from fraying and reinforcing the edge to make it stronger and more durable.

You can use a serger as a sewing machine occasionally but it can't perform most of the sewing machine functions - it cannot backstitch, turn corners, be used for zippers or button holes, or hems.

Where are Janome sewing machines made?

Bernina. if you buy a genuine Bernina it will be the last machine you will ever need. i am a sewing machine mechanic and i work on all brands and i quilt as well as sew all my own clothing. i have owned and sewed on all the brands. has the most precise stitch and there machines have the leased amount of breakdowns or problems. if you buy a cheap singer or other junk you can find at Walmart you will have so much trouble you will end up hating sewing and you wont realize its just your machine that sucks. ++++++++++++++++++++ I tend to agree to some degree. I too have a Bernina, but I also own 2 Viking sewing machines ( one for working with leather, and one for working with very heavy fabrics, such as denim or canvas. I also own a Pfaff which is VERY good for quilting. I have thrown out numerous other makes and models. Though I WILL keep my old Singer treadle. : }

What does the word 'quilt' mean?

Quilt has two meanings: # A decorative bed cover or wall hanging made of colored fabric pieces stitched together with a batting center and a cotton or muslin back. # One step of the process of assembling a quilt that involves stitching the layers together by hand or machine in either straight lines or patterns. This holds the material together so the batting doesn't shift or bunch, and enhances the beauty of the quilt. The exact origin of the quilt is unknown, but they have been made in many different cultures over the centuries. The oldest known remnant dates to c. 960 BCE, in Egypt.
