a short story is a story that is similar to a picture book, or an easy chapter book for young kids, while a novel is a chapter book for older people and is more difficult to read or understand :)
The descriptions 'short story' and 'novel' can mean very much the same thing.
A short story is simply that, a short story, a brief tale. It may be true or fiction, set in the past, present or future. And the subject matter could be anything!
The term 'novel' (meaning 'new story') may also be a short story, but not necessarily so, and is invariably fictional, but intended to reflect real life. 'Novels' often feature some romantic element, but this isn't always the case.
More recent definitions of 'novel' tend to indicate something longer than a 'short story', a more complex tale, and having more characterisation.
