One interpretation:What a great question, and such a fascinating history with it. There are many different stories tangled together regarding St. Valentine's, and it is hard to know exactly which is more historically correct.

The main stories which have led to the association of St. Valentine with "love" birds, are that of a roman festival, bird's mating habits, the "real" Valentines, and a literary giant. All tangled up in the mix and resulting in the day we now celebrate as Valentine's Day.

In ancient Rome, there were many festivals held in and around February which were associated with fertility, the most notable of which is probably Lupercalia. The ancient Athenian calendar meanwhile, held that the period from mid January until mid-February was the month of Gamelion, the time when two of their most powerful Gods, Zeus and Hera, were married. During these festivities, many games were played, including the practise of putting girls names into a box, to be drawn out by a suitor whom she would partner with for the festival, and sometimes beyond. The first love notes!

Pope Gelasius I (492--496) later abolished the festivities however, believing them to be "too Pagan" and primitive. But in many places, the association between January/ February, and couplings remained, and February 14th was known as Lover's day.

How St. Valentine comes into the mix is the harder part, and historians have argued fiercely about it for centuries. There are many legends associated with him, including that he was a priest who defied a ban on marriages (the ruler at the time believed that marriage was causing a decline in men signing up to the army, as only single men could enrol) , and continued to perform ceremonies until he was put to death as a martyr on February 14th, Lover's day. While he was waiting for his execution, couples whom he had married brought him letters of sympathy stating how "love is better than war" - another possible 'love note' origin. Many years later, February 14th was named St. Valentine's day in honour of him.

And now to put the final piece of the puzzle in place!

The origin of the term "love birds" is most likely from a single literary occurrence. In 1382, the English poet, and author Geoffrey Chaucer, wrote a poem to commemorate the 1st anniversary of the engagement of King Richard II of England to Anne of Bohemia. In it, he wrote the lines:

For this was on seynt Volantynys day

Whan euery bryd comyth there to chese his make.

Clearly influenced by the stories based around St. Valentines and February 14th love/ fertility legends, Chaucer unwittingly gave rise to the association of birds with Valentine's.

So what we have is a big old mess of stories, that over time have have merged into one - a bit like Chinese whispers. And that, is one interpretation of how St. Valentine's is linked to mating birds.

The belief of one universe god the creator and ruler of the universe?

I suppose you are asking what such a belief is called. It is referred to, on some occasions, as "monotheism". That is, the belief in one omnipotent God. The belief in several is called "polytheism". Non-Abrahamic religions, such as Buddhism, Tengrism, or Hermeticism, are generally (and blasphemously) called "paganism" by some Christians. Religion in general is called "theism". That is why non-believers are called "atheists", as they place their association with "atheism".

Is there a superstitious belief in sewing at night?

There is at least for my family. My mother (Chinese) told me not to sew at night growing up. I think it had something to do with shrouds being sewn at nightime and the association with that.

Where is Valentine's Day mentioned in the bible?

This is not a Biblical holiday but one of the traditions of men. No one is quite sure who this 'St. Valentine' is as the early Roman Church list three potential martyrs while another source lists eight who had their feast day on February 14th. In England during Geoffrey Chaucer's time of the 1300s, besides the religious association of this day, they also believed that birds began to mate on Valentine's Day (his poem, 'Parliament of Foules'). Shakespeare and some others mention this day as well. However, there is one thing that was specific to February 13 through 15 on the Roman Calendar - the pagan festival of Lupercalia as Robert Meyers stated in his book, 'The Complete Book of American Holidays, pp. 50-51.' The Roman Lupercalia was a feast celebrated in February in honor of the pastoral god, 'Lupercus,' a Roman version of the Greek god 'Pan.' The original festival was founded in the ancient legion of Romulus and Remus - traditionally the founders of Rome reared by a she-wolf (Latin: lupa) in a cave at the base of the Roman Palatine Hill - known as the Lupercal. Young men dressed in the skins of sacrificed goats would run through the Lupercal with strips of the goat hides called 'Februa' in Latin meaning cleansing or purification. Any woman slapped by theses were assured fertility and ease in childbirth. The festival was called the 'Februatio' which lead to the modern month of February today. Over the years, newer customs were attached to this festival like drawing out valentines in honor of the goddess Juno (Meyers, p. 50). Though tradition says Pope Gelasius eradicated the Lupercalia from Christian observance, the intermingling of paganism with Christianity practices by Church leaders, the Lupercalia would soon emerge into the observance of St. Valentine's Day (Myers, pp 50-51). The custom of sending cards began in the 1700s and became commercialized in the 1800s. A USA periodical in 1863 claimed the Valentine's Day was so popular, is was only 2nd to Christmas.

Why did Saint Valentine become a martyr?

Valentine (3rd century), martyr. Two Valentines are listed in the Roman Martyrology on 14 February: one a Roman priest martyred on the Flaminian Way, supposedly under Claudius, the other a bishop of Terni who was martyred at Rome, but whose relics were translated to Terni. The Acts of both are unreliable and the Bollandists assert that these two Valentines were in fact one and the same. Neither of them seems to have any clear connection with lovers or courting couples. The reason for this famous patronage is that birds are supposed to pair on 14 February, a belief at least as old as Chaucer, just as the custom of choosing and calling oneself a Valentine is at least as old as the Paston Letters. On the other hand, some authorities see the custom of choosing a partner on St. Valentine's Day as the survival of elements of the Roman Lupercalia festival, which took place in the middle of February. Whatever the reason, the connection of lovers with St. Valentine, with all its consequences for the printing and retailing industries, is one of the less likely results of the cult of the Roman martyrs. No churches in England seem to be dedicated to Valentine, but from 1835 his relics are claimed by the Carmelite church in Dublin. Feast: 14 February.
