Genocide comes from ancient times. To the modern persons this perception largely stems from the terrible events which took place during World War Two. The word itself was first coined in 1944 CE by the Polish writer Raphael Lemkin who constructed the word by combining 'geno-', from the Greek word for race or tribe, with '-cide', from the Latin word for killing.
The Armenian Genocide began because the Turks believed that Armenia and Turkey was their rightful homeland meant only for Turks. The Armenians had been treated poorly by the Turks for years, but the collapse of the Ottoman Empire in 1908 caused a downfall in the Turkish government. Turkey created the Committee of Union and Progress that promised equality but when the country was defeated in the Bulgarian War, the party was taken over by radical Muslim Turks dedicated to eliminating the Christian Armenians. Led by Mehmet Talaat, Ismail Enver, and Ahmed Jemal, Turkey began the massacres and attorcities that led to the death of hundreds of thousands of innocent Armenian men, women, and children. It was all irrational hatred and a worldwide known genocide, yet Turkey still goes to extreme measures to deny it today. Sadly, the U.S, pressured by Turkey to remain quiet to keep our valuable air base there, still has yet to officially and publicly recognize this as a genocide.
