Best Answer

Farming was the basis of all the ancient Greek city-states, equally so in Sparta and Athens.

The difference was that Athenians owned and farmed their own plots.

In Sparta, after they conquered Messenia they turned the people into serfs (bound to the land and paying a percentage of their cops to their overlord). Their overlord was Sparta, which allocated the produce of seven serfs to each Spartan citizen, which allowed the Spartans to concentrate on military training.

The Athenian farmers obviously had to do their military training part time.

What are Sparta and Athens differences?

Unlike Spartans, Athenians were more interested in building a democracy than building a military force.

How are the Spartans different from the Athenians?

They were different Greek city-states. The Athenians had a democracy as their form of government; Sparta had a mix between an oligarchy and a monarchy. The Athenians encouraged trade and were influenced by other city states; the Spartans avoided new ideas whenever possible, and only conquered other city states. The Athenians valued art, science, and music; the Spartans cared about hardly anything but war. The Athenians treated their women fairly poorly; Spartan woman had more rights than almost any other women in the ancient world. Athenians had few slaves; the Spartan society relied entirely on slaves/helots to support the infrastructure. The Athenians weren't very war oriented; the Spartans were extremely bellicose and amazing soldiers.

What did Athens and Sparta receive training in?

OK, first its the Athenians and Spartans, come on. I"m a kid and i can spell better then who asked this. Athenians and Spartans were trained in different things. The Spartans were trained purely for war. At age 7 all Spartan boys were sent to school to learn how to fight, and lie, and steal food. They were essentially taught to fight and stay alive. Spartan women were taught how to be a good wife and how to have children but other than that women were not taught very much. I'm not exactly sure what Athenians were taught. Some were taught to fight, some to be other professions such as a doctor, and women were more respected and had better rights in Athens.

During the Peloponnesian War more than one third of Athenians including Pericles dies as a result of what?

The disease that devastated the Athenians has been a matter of debate . The loss of Pericles from the disease compromised the Athenian war effort and may have led to the defeat of Athens by the Spartans due to a lack of quality leadership . The disease itself remains a moot point .

Which was an advantage of Sparta during the Peloponnesian?

"What" was the Spartan advantage during the Peloponnesian War? Persian Gold, a feared army on land, and Athenian hubris. Through most of the first two decades of the war there was mostly stalemate: the Spartan boxed the Athenians inside their walls and raided Attica, while the Athenians roamed the seas at will and raided the Peloponnese. The Athenians knew better than to fight the Spartan phalanx (they lost on the two occasions there were major hoplite engagements) and the Spartans knew better than to fight the Athenians at sea (where they lost on the occasions they or their allies tried). The big turn of the tide came in the Sicilian Expedition, where most of the Athenian fleet and some 50,000 Athenian Imperials sailors, soldiers and marines were wiped out, along with most of the Imperial fleet of over 200 triremes (warships). The Spartans, advised by the able Alcibiades (a former Athenian) used Persian gold to build their own massive fleet, which was now on par with the Athenian fleet as they were both composed of inexperienced, newly-raised crews. The Spartans still lost (see the Battle of Arginusae) but they could raise more money (from the Persians!) to build more ships and hire more sailors, and the Athenians could not. The Spartans on a number of occasions offered the Athenians peace terms of status quo ante bellum ("the status before the war") but the Athenian assembly, a very radical, almost communist organisation, refused. So the Spartan admiral Lysander finally and utterly defeated the Athenian navy at the Battle of Aegospotamia in 405. Now stripped of their navy--and so access to their colonies, and their source of gold and food--the Athenians could not continue to fight, as the Spartan army (never defeated by the Athenians) was right outside their Long Walls. So what was the Spartan advantage? A highly feared army on land to hold the Athenians in check, but a good navy and Persian gold to finally defeat them at sea.

What are the differences between Sparta and Athens?

Spartans are from Sparta and Athens are from Athen. Plus, Athens was just a city-state, whereas Sparta is an entire different nationality.
