It was an attempt by Conan Doyle to eliminate the character, whom he had grown tired of. The public outcry was so great, that he brought him back through a clever plot line.

Conan Doyle had written a novel between "The Final Problem" and "The Adventure of the Empty House" called "The Hound of the Baskervilles". (published 1901-02) [worth reading] The plot was set before Holmes' death, so that Conan Doyle would not have to resurrect him. He asked (and got) twice as much per word from his publishers, Smith, Elder & Sons to put Holmes into the plot.
The book sold so well that both the Strand Magazine and Colliers in the U.S. made Conan Doyle an offer he did not refuse to bring Holmes back from the 'dead' Thus 'The Return of Sherlock Holmes', 'The Valley of Fear', 'The Casebook of Sherlock Holmes' and 'His Last Bow'.
