Meriwether Lewis was the actual guy Pres. Jefferson asked to go on the expidition/journey with a purpose. But he didn't think he could do it alone so he asked William Clark to go with him
President Thomas Jefferson asked Captain Meriwether Lewis and Lieutenant William Clark to explore the new territory in an effort to have a realistic assessment of the resources the land had to offer as well as knowing how the land itself was laid out and the usability of it.
Thomas Jefferson sent Lewis and Clark to explore the new west after the acquisition of Louisiana Territory. He doubled the size of the US during his presidency.
On January 18, 1803, Thomas Jefferson privately asked Congress to provide funding for a western expedition, which later became famously known as the Lewis and Clark Expedition.
He asked Lewis and Clark to map a route to the Pacific Ocean, to study climate, wildlife, and mineral resources of the new lands.
Thomas Jefferson had dreamed of exploring the West for at least 20 years before he even became President. In 1783 he had asked William Clark's brother, George Rogers Clark, to take on the challenge. George declined, and after the Louisiana territory was purchased, Jefferson asked Lewis. Clark would meet Lewis at Camp Dubois and introduce himself as the brother of George Rogers Clark. William had plenty of experience concerning boat navigation and had gathered a group of men to join. Lewis accepted his offer, not only for the extra manpower, but Clark would also help keep the journals and notes updated.
